We have recently had Key Permaculture construct a secure netted cover to protect our small home orchard. Although it is a relatively small area, with only a dozen espaliered stone fruits and eight large blueberry bushes, the design and construction of suitable and effective bird protection was always going to be problematic.

The area is oddly shaped, on a sloping suburban block and sandwiched in a fully built area between the house and two fences, with an awkward drop of several meters into the adjoining property. The espaliered stone fruit trees are quite mature, in two long raised beds about 600mm apart, about 500mm from the fence and less than a meter from the house. The 800mm square individual raised blueberry beds are placed haphazardly in a small adjoining area with very tight minimal access between them. We required securely gated entry at each end. In addition, access from the street is up a steep driveway, under the house on poles and along a narrow, uneven, twisting path which, in some places, has a low ceiling height. To complicate matters, we wanted certain sections of netting to be able to be detached and then reattached securely each year, for pest spraying and subsequent window cleaning.

Certainly a challenge in both design and construction!

Dave Key inspected the area, discussed our requirements, took measurements and shortly afterwards came up with a design that satisfied us.

Dave and his fellow workers arrived when expected and worked efficiently as an integrated team over the next several days until the job was completed. The members of the team all had complementary skills, were excellent problem solvers, and were exceptionally pleasant, cheerful and hard workers.

We were impressed to find that Dave would only accept the best solution to any tricky construction problem that arose, was meticulous in all aspects of his work, used only top quality materials, and was concerned that the finished job was as perfect as possible. He was satisfied only when we were happy with the results.
